I was in the car the other day listening to Classic Vinyl on Sirius XM and heard an instrumental version of Over the Hills and Far Away by Led Zeppelin, which I had never heard before. It’s a very different listening experience without Robert Plant’s iconic vocals soaring over the top of the music. You can find it on their 2007 Mothership compilation, which features cover art by the great Shepard Fairey. As great as Led Zeppelin was, I really do prefer Robert Plant’s solo material. His collaborations with other artists (like Alison Krauss) are fantastic—and if you ever get the chance to see him live, go. He also shared songs and stories from his life on a terrific limited series podcast called Digging Deep.

A really interesting listening experience — while the tune is still pleasing to hear, it feels neutered without the voice. Not necessarily the words, but his voice is an instrument that is palpably absent.
One of my favorite songs of theirs, no idea there was an instrumental version. I love the collaborations Robert has done
