I’ve been fascinated by astronomy, cosmology, and all things space since I was a kid, so this Blip is super cool to me. The gravitational field generated by a black hole is so strong that not even light can escape, but recently NASA released an audio clip of what a black hole sounds like—sort of. The sound is the result of pressure waves sent out by the black hole in the Perseus galaxy cluster causing ripples in the hot gas, which they were able to translate into a note. The note is so low—about 57 octaves below middle C—that it can’t be heard by the human ear. According to NASA, the signals “are being heard 144 quadrillion and 288 quadrillion times higher than their original frequency.”

It’s such a cool sound. Creepy, but cool.
A very eerie sound. Science is amazing.
