Recently, Adrianne and I finished watching The Last of Us on HBO Max and it did not disappoint. In addition to being a fantastic story full stop, I think this might be the best adaptation of a game—movie or television—that I’ve ever seen. They were faithful to the source material when they needed to be, and made some brilliant choices to flesh out the story in scenes or entire episodes that weren’t even in the game. One of the cool things HBO Max did was to include a ton of terrific bonus content, like a podcast and little mini-docs called Inside the Episode that offer insights into what went into making a particular episode. Here’s a YouTube playlist for all of them (be warned that it’s in reverse chronological order). They also made a 30-minute “making of…” which unfortunately you can only watch on HBO Max, but it’s a really great deep-dive into how they made the show. If you’re only aware of the show and not the game, here’s a trailer of the PS5 remaster and a side-by-side of episode one, showing scenes from the game and the show (WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS). As brilliant as the show looks, the score by Gustavo Santaolalla fits the show perfectly. Here’s a YouTube playlist for that too, which also includes fantastic covers of Long Long Time performed by Nick Offerman and Never Let Me Down Again performed by Jessica Mazin.
