Roxy Music is almost always in my regular musical rotation. They were such a revelatory discovery in my musical education and beyond the genius of their own music, they sent me off in sonic directions that I never could have found on my own. I love the early stuff, like Ladytron, Virginia Plain, and In Every Dream Home a Heartache but, for me, the crown jewel of their discography is the brilliant Avalon. The music was dreamy and ethereal, despite the departure of Brian Eno, and frontman Bryan Ferry was the pinnacle of cool. Recently, I came across a video of Roxy Music performing a set at Montreux 29 April 1973 which really captures the weirdness and the genius of one of the great art rock bands. I never got a chance to see them live, but I have seen Bryan Ferry live five or six times and he’s always been fantastic. I could do an entire podcast about Roxy Music and the bands they have influenced or led me to. Hmmm…now there’s an idea!
